A 2D top-down adventure RPG inspired by The Legend of Zelda and Dark Souls. You don't have a Soul and need to collect Souls or die. Survive, kill beasts, explore the lands, clear hellish dungeons and claim your Soul back!

Report RSS Introduction to The Soul Collector

The Soul Collector is a 2D top-down Zeldalike based off the Grimm's Fairy Tales. It is build with Game Maker 8. The hero can explore the world, defeat bosses and enemies, talk to NPCs, equip items and learn skills. The game will have lots of allusions to retro games.

Note: The HUD is placeholder, as are the Rupee sprites and a few sound effects.

The Soul Collector is a 2D top-down adventure game in the vein of Zelda. The ''hero'', as I'd like to call him now because I don't have a name for him yet, is in fact a troubled, enigmatic anti-hero who collects Souls to ''ease his loneliness''. The game begins in the hero's house, where his collection can also be seen in the form of three Soul Jars. These items give the hero more HP, like the Heart Containers do in Zelda. I didn't work on the house yet, though. So expect that later.

The hero in the rain

See those yellow balls of light? Those are Souls. The hero is digging here, like in Zelda, but the Rupees are all placeholder like I said. They will probably just be changed into coins. Behind the red tree and the bushes is a Soul Jar. I'm personally kinda statisfied with the sprite for it!

The hero in the rain

The hero dodge rolling. The roll move can be used to dodge enemy attacks. Speaking of enemies... there will be a lot of enemy types in the game, most of them being the really sick and twisted creatures called ''the Soulless''. They attack the hero and basically everyone else because they want Souls, because they don't have Souls themselves. The other enemy types will just be monsters that fit their respective area's theme.

The hero in the rain

See that cave there at the top-left? That'll be the first cave in The Soul Collector. It'll probably be a small dungeon with a few monsters and an NPC. I can't really say much about it right now, but I'll be showing it soon enough!
