You play as Dr. Helena Pearson, a scientist aboard the deep-sea research lab “Cascade II”, 3000 feet below the surface, located on the edge of an abyssal trench. After a storm strands you alone in the habitat with minimal contact from your crew members on the surface, you’re forced to survive a week while managing your resources carefully. Be warned, however: you’re not alone down there. Defend yourself and the habitat from the horrors of the deep, find clues buried in the sea floor, and unravel the mystery behind the things that lurk in the inky waters outside.

Thalassophobia is being developed by several talented members of Facepunch Studios forums from around the world, with backgrounds in creating custom content for AAA titles. We’re currently developing the game using the Unreal engine, but plan on switching to Source 2 if it comes out sometime this year or early next year, as our team is most familiar with Valve’s Source Engine.

Team Changes and discussions

News

Thalassophobia is still alive! The team's been going through some changes, and we're discussing some new ideas using the assets we already have.

A few of our team members have gone off to do other things, however we remain optimistic about Thalassophobia and its potential. We currently would like to focus on creating something to build hype and earn us some much needed cash to help fund the full game. I won't share much on what we're thinking of yet since it's all tentative, but we think this possible new direction will help us move the project forwards on what we currently have the ability to do now.

I hope folks will be patient and will continue to have an interest in our project!

So...It's like Soma and Subnautica? ..but on the Source engine? Why not wait for Source 2? The Source 1 is not exactly an AAA game engine...or is it?

Any updates guys?

kabeltelevizio, of course Source is a AAA engine. Source was used to make many AAA games starting with Half Life 2, it was also used to make TitanFall 1 and 2 both very good looking games. Source is a evolving engine, the version used to make HL2 is not the exact same source used to make Portal, etc, Valve updated the engine through the years.

Btw Source 2 engine is Source but with remade development tools and a Vulkan render, this new engine version is still (in 2018) unreleased for other developers to use, unless you want to make mods for DOTA 2.

Dude, this message is over two and a half years old, and at the time it seemed like Valve was releasing Source 2.

Valve's last game was released five years ago, better luck with Unity or Unreal.

Yes is old but to me it doesn't matter, it was inducing in error, anyone reading it today would assume Source is not a AAA engine, when it was and still is. It doesn't matter when Valve released their "last" game, other developers also use the engine, both Day of Infamy and TitanFall 2 use the latest version of Source and were more or less recently released. Of course, Valve engine is not used today as much as it was in the past and that, is because Valve has been neglecting their gaming side and letting other engines take the limelight.
