Unigine requires team of coders to get a project going, it has unoptimized networking, no cel-shading (SS2 uses more advanced technique than SS1), Unigine is slower than DarkPlaces, level making is a pain with Unigine, Unigine's team refused to make Blender exporter so I had to pay to make one (money wasted), really bad customer support, no way to make DLC / mission packs as easy as with DarkPlaces, no dedicated server, no modding SDK for end-users. I can go on and on.

If some of these issues were resolved, and I had big team, I could use Unigine. However, I had dedicated C++ coder with ton of experience and full source Unigine license. His conclusion was that Unigine isn't cut out to be indie engine, and it isn't cut out to power FPS games. Not yet at least.

So while we tried to get basic FPS cam with view weapon running in Unigine, I coded what you see in the video using DarkPlaces (and I am not really a coder). I know that there are quite a few licensees for Unigine, but I have yet to see their progress. Some companies who bought into Unigine still looking for qualified personnel to get their games to run.

There are nice features I'd like to have for the project, but these are mostly cosmetic features. Ragdolls, LOD for terrain, vegetation system (kinda like SpeedTree in UDK), cloth. That's all I can remember. Rendering wise there isn't much I need. DarkPlaces is pretty good at what it does.
