Steam Marines is a Squad-Based Tactical Roguelike being developed by Worthless Bums. It features: - 2D retro-styled art and turn based action. - Procedurally Generated Levels. - A squad of combatants fighting for their lives in monster filled levels. - Use your squad to cover defensive positions or funnel enemies into chokepoints to blow them up. Steampunk spaceship under attack by aliens, you say? The aim of the game is to progress through the various decks of your besieged steampunk spaceship in order to repel the alien invaders and get out of dodge. It features permadeath and will have a recruitment system. Build your squad members into deadly, long-range marksmen, or up-close-and-personal death machines. But no one is invincible, and if someone dies you'll have to replace him/her with a raw recruit. If the entire squad dies it's game over.

Posted by on

Hello, everyone!

Everything is looking great. For v0.5.8a we've got new sounds from Tapio Liukkonen, directional sprites for Detocroix, and gameplay tweaks and changes to alleviate the difficulty concerns of players. There's also some really awesome steampunk music you'll all get to hear on August 30th!

Also a very special thanks to two people - Robert Shenton for making this Steam Marines logo out of the kindness of his heart:

And to Delyth Angharad for taking the time to make a YouTube video of the v0.5.7 alpha build!

I'm sure you'll be seeing their names again! And as usual you can download the latest build of Steam Marines on the official website or on the forums. Thanks for reading!

This, is an excellent update. This compared to 0.5.7, although not much seems to change, the balance is far better. I feel like I'm actually playing the game right now. Things i noticed:

+ There's a some bugs when 1 or more members of your team die. Things like when you enter another deck, your dead comrades are there, with 0 health and actions though, but they still move on Solo-mode, and still block up things
+ I can't really tell at this stage, but do the enemies get tougher with each deck descended? If not, they should :)
+ I'm not sure if you did this on purpose, but on follow-mode, your whole team changes to the colour of the solo-er. If this is intended, i wouldn't reccomend it, you need to be consistent with that kind of thing.
+ Grenades don't seem to do much?

Anyway, great job, looking forward to more!

Hey BaronVengeous,

- I've had reports of the death/deck bug and I'm looking into it.
- The enemies currently do not get tougher and there are only three in-game atm. There were more varied/difficult monsters prior to the steampunk change and I'm waiting on art assets.
- Thanks for reporting the follow mode bug; I didn't know that!
- Grenades should deal aoe damage up to two tiles away. Currently they only trigger if the grenade actually hits a valid target (you can't throw it between two targets yet).

Thank you for the excellent feedback!
