Report RSS First Strike team - Star Wars: Battlecry team merge!

That's right, we're merging the First Strike team into the Star Wars: Battlecry team as we both share similar ideas and want to create the best game we can!

Posted by on

Hello Star Wars: Battlecry fans (and the First Strike fans who are also reading this),

Today we have a big bit of news for you folks - the First Strike team is merging with the Star Wars: Battlecry team!
As Chad (new project leader of First Strike explains), 'When the First Strike team looked into switching to the Unreal 4 game engine, it just made sense to look into combining forces instead of starting completely over on a new engine. Both teams have a desire to develop a PC focused Star Wars game that simulates the the role of a trooper fighting for the Rebel or Imperial forces in large scale combined arms battles.'
When developing a game for a galaxy far, far away, almost everything has to be created from scratch. One of the things we're exploring at the moment is importing First Strike's large collection of models into the Unreal engine. If assets require improvements or modifications, this can be done but it will hopefully mean things will get done quicker and we can produce the free stand alone Star Wars game fans have been wanting all along.

On top of that, the fact that we are merging with a very experienced and skilled team is exciting and we look forward to the future!

We will keep you updated if anything else changes about the game/team.

Thank you for your support and patience,

The Star Wars: Battlecry team (and the newly merged First Strike members!)

Btw, here's the awesome pic team member Jo Greve made for us to celebrate the merge!

Awesome. I enjoyed a little bit of time with first strike and I can't wait to see what they do with battlecry.

Very interesting news! But im a little confused. I thought battlecry was being developed on the cryengine?

We switched to UE4 from Cryengine a couple of months ago. This is because both engines are now part of a subscription model and we thought that UE 4 is (at least at the moment) the stronger engine with better documentation and support for what we're trying to achieve. Cryengine is very powerful and some people prefer it, but our team felt that it would be best if we made the move.

So just like DICE, now this game as well won't include the Clone Wars. How very disappointing. This game probably won't even be finished by the time battlefront comes out so I'd rather play the lesser of the two disappointments. At least battlefront has a professional, full-time team behind it ensuring a well made game even if the content is undesirable. Best of luck none the less, this is just my opinion as I'm sure your decision sits well with many other people.

Fair enough, although I'd like to add that we're trying to distance our game from any DICE Battlefront comparisons. We're not trying to be an exact replica of their game, we will add different things, have community made content and above all, the game we're making will be 100% free. Of course we don't have a full team of professionals working on Battlecry full time (we do have many very skilled members having said that) but that doesn't mean we can't make an enjoyable Indie game.

No doubt about the skill of your members or the commitment of your team. I'm sure you are fully capable of making an enjoyable game but unfortunately just not as quickly and possibly not to the same level of quality. Just know that I'm certainly not trying to insult or berate you or this project; I'm just merely expressing my disappointment.

They share the same theme, but I'm sure the games will be vastly different. Indie devs seem to take more risks, Dice will probably just play it safe and make the battlefront that we've already played, but on Frostbite. Nothing wrong with that of course.

I'm curious how each one will differentiate themselves from each other.

One thing I'm really worried about is this project getting C&D'd after it's got a lot of mechanics set in place and then Dice poaches those mechanics from this project.
