We're nearing the final stretch for our redesign efforts for the Spark Bot and he's looking pretty snazzy! So far we defined the backstory for our lil hero, defined his general shape and size, and fell in love with the idea that his head is a giant monitor that can express emotion through his eyes or some imagery.
COLORS!
This round, we're showing you different color mock ups. Quite frankly, we have dozens of color variants so we're only showing you a few. And quite frankly, we haven't quite hit upon the color that feels just right. We wanted to keep the colors selection minimal, but other than that we tried complimentary colors, contrasting colors, and well... maybe you like one better!
Right now, we're leaning more towards a blue palette with hints of orange and red. This is partly because we see the arch enemy that Spark Bot faces is predominantly orange and red with hints of blue and grey. Basically just the opposite!
POSES!
As our pint-sized hero jumps, flies, reacts in awe, we wanted his pose to also convey a sense of wonder, like a kid staring up at something grand. It's a fun contrast having the Spark Bot react this way since once he's in an exo-suit, he's pretty much a deadly kill machine wiping out everything in his path.
Below are some samples of what we mean. Notice how sometimes his face conveys some action as well by changing to an image.
We're liking these images so much that I hope we can work some animation of him into the game. Since the game is predominantly played through first person perspective, you won't see much of Sparky. So we'll eventually evaluate an option where key gameplay events zoom out and you can see the Spark Bot.
I may do more one update on our design efforts if you are interested, otherwise, next up we'll cover something new!
Each emotion should change the color of his face.
