I'm having a lot of trouble with the level defending the city with the long gun; I just can't beat it! Any advice?

Sorry for the very late response.
For this mission, check the dots on the map. Keep shooting in direction of enemies even if they're not onscreen. Majority of enemies will go down with one hit. By the time some get closer you should have enough time and health to keep going until the end of the game.

Did you try to install the game via the downloable installer ? It should work through the Desura App, but we experienced an issue with it so please try to download it directly from the website.
The game is pretty fun though it's quite easy to exploit the trading system ( Laputa and Passage Fort allow for very quick trading of gold and materials), and the random nature of it makes it very hard in certain places (the escort missions can be pretty much impossible in some instances as they die in two hits from the multi-cannon ships).
Also later on there are story missions that are unplayable because all of the ships disappear and all you can see is trails, impending the players from advancing in the story..
So far the two I've noticed this happening in is the mission where you can't attack and just have to run. And the mission right after that where you have to defend the city.
At that time I had the third plane (one with rockets), not sure if this is related but it might be. Also normal city missions and random encounters were OK.

The game looks great, but the gameplay falls short.
I got a T3 ship after playing for 15 minutes and just spamming rockets everywhere, and the game has some random difficulty spikes due to it's random nature. You can clear a mission in a few seconds or die instantly depending on what ship spawns. In one escort mission a ship that fires broadside spawned right in front of the VIP and killed it in a few seconds, there was nothing I could do, when I reloaded the mission, only a few tiny ships spawned that got killed by the escort itself so that I didn't even have to do anything.
Also the map music starts to get annoying after about 10 minutes...
So yeah, great concept, looks great, but the gameplay is too unbalanced to stay fun for long.
