RUNNING WITH RIFLES Demo Beta 0.76 Linux
Dec 19, 2012 Demo 0 commentsSingle player, one map without vehicles, rank progression capped. Full beta version available in Desura!
Pick up your rifle and join the Green or Grey army in their mission to send the enemy home in a box! RUNNING WITH RIFLES is an open world, top-down, tactical shooter for single player and multiplayer online, that puts you right in the middle of chaos in towns, trenches and forests turned into ruthless battlefields, controlling just one soldier in an army of several hundreds. In a war where men die like flies and endless streams of reinforcements run to fill the void, it takes tactics and marksmanship to capture territories effectively. The open world nature of the game enables you to use a multitude of approaches to help the front line move – it's up to you to shape your role. Experience the complete arc starting as a private hardening into a high ranking officer with a squad under command, arming yourself with a variety of weapons and vehicles on your way to glory!

Hey there!
So, we've finally made it to a point that we got
to get the medic feature into gameplay! While you might wonder why opt for getting wounded and hope for a medic to come to get you back into game rather than just dying and running back to the zone as another soldier, it's primarily the rare weapons that are meant to make you want to get that vest on; otherwise you'll lose the rare weapon on respawn.
In this version, we've also enabled the rare weapons in classic single-map matches, which means those PvP oriented online matches, or single player, might experience some player(s) getting temporarily overpowered if they manage to find a rare. Easiest way to find one is to listen, it's the bots that usually happen to bring them into a battle, but you might find one in a crate too. Can't wait to see the players getting hunted for the weapons they carry :)
Other than that, plenty of tweaks here and there, a new weapon, a new mortar call, and a hefty amount of new modding potential; map size is open now, for one. See the detailed change log here.
0.89 or 0.90 will see plenty of changes under the hood to make it easier to create server-specific settings for match resources without clients having to download overlay mods to be able to join a server. This should make it easy to alter active weapons, items, vehicles and factions strictly on server side, clients will get the relevant info from the server to configure their game session accordingly and load the needed resources if they have them available. This will make it possible to set up a broader variety of matches in single player too, hopefully including single player Invasion.

The demo features the single player mode from the full beta with the second map included, with some weapon, rank and difficulty limitations.
The demo includes all the features in the full beta 0.4, except online multiplayer. The demo was initially released on September 16th 2011. The full beta...

This is a great game. I've described it to friends as a combination between General Chaos, Cannon Fodder, a rather obscure but innovative game called Net War and once vehicles are added, even a touch of Warhawk. On top of all of this, the developer is great and really listens to the community.

@Linux_Penguin Gonna study it a bit more on my own Linux, I'm not seeing this kind of behavior on the Windows build very frequently

@Linux_Penguin Thanks for the log; too bad the crash isn't one of the cases where the game would've known having ended up in invalid state

@GeneralAltoids Isn't it always? :P I'm not too familiar with Ogre GPU profiling methods, I can't even use NVPerfHud as I'm an ATI user.

@GeneralAltoids That's right. I use Visual C++ 2008 Express for most of development, on Linux I just build it using the good old GNU make

This is by far one of the most fun games I've played in a long time! It's so much fun to mod, add your own custom guns, sounds, and faction specific soldiers and get the battle going. Definitely buy this game.
Just to note, 0.88.2 should be out soon, should fix those map change/online join (which cause a map change) crashes
All right, it's out.
I'm suprised how much fun this game is! The learning curve is really low, so you can just jump into the action but mastering it perfectly takes some more time, which keeps it interesting for a longer period of time. It's also a great game for LAN, because of it's size (download, install and play takes no more than 3 minutes) and accessibility.
This would be an instant winner if future versions would have different gamemodes and maybe a single player campaign.
Single player campaign is certainly being worked on, we've been testing the coop version of it on a few servers online. The single player variation will likely differ a bit from it eventually, allowing traveling between maps and having multiple maps under active battle.
Shouldn't take too long now to get the basic linear version of it included in the releases.
We've also been doing some preparations for game modes, soon mods and servers will be able to use a variety of tricks to make the game work under different rules than "capture the map to win".
It is interesting... I though this game will be a simple arcade like Cannon Fodder or Army Men like (or inspired from them)
But now it goes more and more complicated, new features...
So what is about game setting, these cartoony visuals and green army vs grey army??
Mostly the new features are optional for people who seek something more in-depth, you are still allowed and at times encouraged to just simply run & gun; the basic mechanism hasn't changed.
We're not wanting to make this another Axis & Allied war game so currently we are at Green vs Grey. It allows us to keep the setting open until we know what we want and can do with the background story for the final release.
There are already mods that take the other route by adding USMC, Russian OMON, Chinese PLA, British factions with skins and names, check it out here Modulaatio.com
Visuals are cartoony for the reason that it allows more creative use with colors than "real life", and, you know, cartoony is light-hearted and fun. This isn't the serious war game.
You might want to provide a little more information than that if you want them to check it out.
RWR has been suggested as a future featured game on IndieGameStand. If anyone would like to chip in (devs particularly!), check out the link! Indiegamestand.com
hi guys, we already discussed that internally and we came to the conclusion that "pay what you want" offers isn't really what we are looking for, at least not in the beta phase and neither in the couple of months right after the final steam release. It would bring some new players to fill the multiplayer servers, sure but this might be achieved with other solutions which seems more suitable like getting some footage done by bigger youtube personalities where we got some positive feedback but unfortunately nothing happened (yet?).
Perfectly understandable, I'll let the community know for now (should keep people from bugging you :P). For the record, I bought this a while ago, and I think it's fantastic. Can't wait to see it take off!
