"We have waited centuries for this moment. The rivers will flow with the blood of those who oppose us." - Kane

Renegade X: Black Dawn - January Teaser - Mod DB

The conflict between the Global Defense Initiative (GDI) and the Brotherhood of Nod originated in the late twentieth century, when a meteor carrying a mysterious substance struck the Tiber river in Italy. It was named Tiberium, which composed of valuable elements. Although Tiberium has proven to be an important source of income when refined, it is fatally toxic, and its contagious spread threatens all life on earth.

GDI was formed in 1985 by the United Nations as an international security force set to combat global terrorism. Conceived as a united peacekeeping military force, GDI depends on the technological sophistication of its weaponry, and the superior training and loyalties of its officers.

At the same time, the Brotherhood of Nod, led by the charismatic Kane, grew to prominence. Working largely in third world countries, wherever there was discontent and unrest, there was Kane. With the promise of a New World Order and bankrolled by the illicit Tiberium research and trade that Kane made famous, Nod began to gain power. A few scattered, disaffected units grew into an army with powerful atomic weaponry, ruthless tactics, and a Tiberian fortune.

Where GDI stands for international stability and the containment of Tiberium's expansive spread, Nod seeks to overthrow the established order and build a world centred on Tiberium research.

Renegade X

Renegade X is a tactical First and Third Person Shooter with Real Time Strategy elements, set in the Command & Conquer universe. It is a high quality award-winning free indie game being created on the Unreal Development Kit. Originally, Renegade X was an Unreal Tournament 3 mod, and the beta won six awards, including "#2 Best Vehicle Set" for the Making Something Unreal Contest, "#3 Best Upcoming Mod" for the Mod of the Year Contest in 2008, and "#2 Best Multiplayer" in 2009's MOTY.

In 2010, Totem Arts made the decision to make Renegade X a standalone game, available to everyone. Since then, the team has released a singleplayer mini-campaign called Operation Black Dawn. Black Dawn was released in January 2012, and it is a demonstration of what's to come. We are currently developing the awaited multiplayer version, which has yet to be released.

Feature List

  • Two Unique Factions that differ in weapons, vehicles, and gameplay style
  • 40+ Weapons and Vehicles
  • A Functional Ingame Economy allowing players to manage their own credits, purchase weapons and vehicles, maintain and increase income, and hurdle enemy credit flow.
  • Command & Conquer Mode is the central Renegade X gamemode, which will feature a skirmish pitted between GDI and Nod. Each team will have their own respective bases composed of key structures, and the main objective is to destroy the enemy base while protecting your own
  • A singleplayer mini-campaign, complete with 1-2 hours of gameplay and cinematics. Black Dawn was released in January 2012 and is available for download
  • Capturable Tech Structures allowing teams to buff up their offensive capabilities and economic reserves in multiplayer
  • Superweapons at the disposal of players such as Nuclear Weapons, spaced-based Ion Cannons, and airstrikes.
  • Skirmish Mode, allowing you to play offline with bots that are compatible with C&C-mode
  • And oodles more!

We're just about ready to roll into our next phase of development, and so it's time to let you in on our housekeeping business.

New Forums!

The current Renegade X forums served us well (not really), but it's been needing some visual and technical upgrades. We will be migrating to a new phpBB3 forum this weekend. The new forums will require a password reset, so before you say that your old password doesn't work, please press the "Forgot Password?" button once the new forums are up. You will know the forum has changed when the layout looks different from the current one. And it'll actually be decent this time, we promise.

Beta Testing - Phase II

In March, we put out an application to our Phase II closed beta. For a long and tenuous application, we had an overwhelming response. We are happy to announce that roughly 75% of the applicants have been accepted and will be hearing from us on April 30th 2013. We will then give the testers some time to get cozy and familiarize themselves with the rules and tasks. The internal beta will start in May 2013.

Progress has been great. The game is running smoothly and most of the core features have been completed. A lot of polishing and bug-fixing is necessary, and we hope to be focusing on that in the next few months. Overall we are very excited to be starting our first rounds of major testing, and we'll be sure to show off some new footage in a little while.

Mesa

Mesa was a stock map for the original C&C Renegade, and it has now been remade. You can check out our full story on the map here: Renegade-x.com

Below are some fresh new images:

Mesa is the first map that would feature the blue Tiberium that C&C Tiberian Sun made famous. Blue Tiberium is more valuable, but it is also explosive and therefore more dangerous to both infantry and vehicles.

Flak Cannon

6 months ago, we announced in our Game Design videocast that the GDI Tiberium-based weapons would be exchanged for new alternatives. This was a creative choice, and it was done because we believe that it is not in GDI's character to weaponize Tiberium. Tiberium and chemical weapons has been more associated with Nod in the C&C universe, so it was strange that GDI had more Tiberium weapons in C&C Renegade. As we've said in a previous update, Patch's Tiberium Flechette was exchanged for the new Tactical Rifle - the incendiary weapon featured in Black Dawn.

Moreover, because the same GDI character (Sydney) was used twice for two different character classes, we decided to exchange the 150 Sydney character with Angus McFarland from Black Dawn. This way we could avoid confusion in multiplayer with having two "Sydneys". Since her Tiberium Autorifle was removed from the game, we've created a new weapon: the Flak Cannon.

Not only did the Tiberium Autorifle not fit GDI, it was seldom used in multiplayer. The new Flak Cannon works much like the Unreal Tournament gun. It has two fire modes: the primary fire shoots flak shells that disperse with distance, and the secondary fire shoots a flak grenade. Since Nod's 150-credit weapon worked like an upgraded Flamethrower, we thought it would be befitting if GDI's 150-credit weapon worked like an upgrade of GDI's basic infantry as well. The primary fire resembles the shotgun while the secondary resembles the grenade launcher.

"The McFarland" will cost 150 credits, and it is most effective in close-quarter combat.

ChemSpray

The Nod Chemspray is the answer to the GDI flak cannon. It fires a deadly toxic gas that leaves a long-lasting poison effect on enemy infantry. The Chemical Warrior will also be given a Tiberium suit that will allow it to walk on Tiberium without harm. Check it out:

That's all for today. Keep an eye out for more updates.

Highest Rated (4 agree) 8/10

The campaign was quite generic with obviously amateur voice-acting, but I went into it with the mindset of considering it a tech demo for what is to come and which matters most: the multiplayer. The game was surprisingly polished and felt very responsive and fluid to play, something where a lot of games, definitely including commercial ones, fail. Handling of weapons work great, at first I was concerned about the generic 2 weapon limit but then considered that you never used more on one class in…

Lowest Rated (12 agree) 3/10

I played through half of the campaign and suffered through two system lockups which required shutting down my computer via the power button. The graphics were pretty decent... Comparable to games from 2008-2009, but the overall (lack of) brightness makes it difficult to discern any details in their work. It seems pointless to me to put so much effort into environments and then make them so dark that you can't see what you're doing without jacking up the gamma in your video card control panel. AI…
