The day you’ve all been waiting for!
First, I’d like to congratulate Totem Arts and the Renegade X community on its 5th anniversary! It’s been five years since we originally announced Renegade X as an Unreal Tournament 3 mod. Since then, we’ve released five multiplayer betas on UT3, and in the past year and a half, we’ve been working on the standalone version of Renegade X. We hope the coming year is as kind to us as our previous years! And what better day to release our singleplayer campaign - Renegade X: Operation Black Dawn.

WHAT IS RENEGADE X?

Renegade X is an indie standalone game, bringing the world of Command & Conquer to ground level. Renegade X is a tactical First Person Shooter with RTS elements, featuring two unique factions, each with distinctive weapons and vehicles. With stunning visuals and remarkable gameplay, Renegade X aims to push the Unreal Engine 3 to its climax.

You can learn more about Renegade X, at Renegade-x.com

OPERATION: BLACK DAWN

Renegade X is both a singleplayer and multiplayer game. On January 28th 2012, Totem Arts released “Renegade X: Black Dawn”. Black Dawn is a free, standalone, short 1-2 hour singleplayer game we have been preparing for quite some time now. Although most of Renegade X’s aspirations are in the multiplayer realm, in mid-2010, we decided that a short campaign would precede our upcoming standalone multiplayer beta.

Black Dawn
is a demonstration of what is to come in the future. The release date of the final multiplayer version is still to be announced, and hence, we thought it would be good for you to have something to play while you wait. This demonstration is complete with a short 10-part campaign, custom cinematics and fantastic gameplay. It will be an opportunity for you to get used to all the weapons, vehicles, characters, and changes before the upcoming multiplayer release.

You can download and play Renegade X: Black Dawn today, for free!

STORY

Operation Black Dawn takes place on a small island in the Black Sea. The island has been turn into a fortress belonging to the Brotherhood of Nod, an international terrorist organization.

Satellite images show that the island is heavily defended: automated turrets lie on all shores, and troop patrols roam the island day and night. Although it is unclear if Nod forces have access to sophisticated anti-aircraft batteries, there are large forests stretching across the island which obstruct the view of satellites.

On a recent trip to the Tiber River in Italy, Tiberium research specialist Dr. Ignatio Mobius and his daughter Sydney Mobius were captured by Nod's Black Hand elite team.

The UN's Global Defense Initiative, an international military force committed to world order and peacekeeping, has been authorized to conduct a secret naval operation. GDI intelligence has confirmed that the Black Hand smuggled the scientists and other prisoners of war onto a ship to Albania, where they were then flown via C-130 to this Nod island stronghold. Since Dr. Mobius is GDI's leading scientist in the field of Tiberium, he is a valuable asset and must be safely returned before the contagious spread of Tiberium further harms the world population and environment.

Hence, the objective of "Operation Black Dawn" is to destroy the Nod base and recover the scientists. Two GDI battalions have been dispatched to deploy on the southern and eastern shores of the island. The battalion to the east is to distract Nod forces, while a commando team attacks the southern beachhead, flanks the enemy and infiltrates the Nod base with air and ground support

Did you add trackers from both torrents? Also not limiting your upload might help (if you are).
Mine was slow at the start but it picked up.

Sorry for any inconveniences. 8 mirrors and 2 torrents apparently was not enough, since we have hundreds of people downloading from each mirror at any given time. We will try to put more mirrors in the next few days.

No doubt, there will be Multiplayer - one of the core purposes of the Renegade X release. However, I don't think there will be a Singleplayer mode even in the final version of Renegade X. However I do hope the team will at least have a Co-Op feature and some skirmish maps to play on. Or at least the NPC backup command feature. (as they did in the St0rm Servers of CnC Renegade)

"Leaving Combat Zone", only 3 weps, no save/restore ammo/weapons... why guys, WHY!?

Why did you do that? This is not a Battlefield 3 or another COD game. All my fears became true. You know what was fun in Renegade gameplay? Large open space areas, lot's of weps that you can equip anytime, great gameplay. But now, it's just another NPC killer as any new FPS.

Unreal 3 can support all this features.

I'll really hope you will reconsider whole gameplay mechanics and take my comment seriously.

Uh.

Please ******* change the automatic restart ********. I had alot of stuff running when I uninstalled this. Then it suddenly restarted and shut everything down without asking. Just automatically did it. ******.

Lost my place in a very long line. Never had a program auto-restart without asking. On top of that, didn't even install.

Got mine from the torrent.

Well it's never happened to me before, in all the years I've been using a PC, never had my PC restart for no reason like that. Event Log shows nothing either.

I just clicked install, it started installing, says it finished installing, then bam, my computer restarted. Folder is empty, as well...such a pain.

Im pretty sure the restart is the result of the .NET framework update that comes with the UDK installer. I don't think the dev team can change anything about that!

On topic: Wonderful game! I cannot wait for the multiplayer release later on.

The gun sounds are weak, very weak. THey need to be improved, if not completely replaced. They sound muffled.

Graphics & performance were nice. 99% GPU usage, very few games can do that for my 470 OC'ed. Ran it maxed out @ 1920 x 1200, with 4xAA & 8xAF.

However, something felt...wrong. I don't know, it didn't feel like Renegade. Enemies went down way to easily on the difficult difficulty. AI was really bad, I haven't seen AI this bad in a long time...though the overall focus is MP, so I guess this is OK.

It was missing something crucial. I can't explain it, it didn't feel like COmmand & COnquer Renegade, or part of the universe at all. It was to dark and brooding; not campy at all, which is what the series has always been.

This is no Renegade my friends , no sir , hopefully the multiplayer will be good but I can't play it since it DERPS my computer for no sreason :)

Okay, I haven't played yet but I'll give my opinions so far First. Automatic...restart.....WHY?!!??!?! I had been downloading a file but I said "I just downloaded this, I'll install it" then all of a sudden *BAM* your computer is being restarted...WTF?!?!?! Its been YEARS since I've seen a program so archaically designed as to FORCE a restart. Not even MICROSOFT does that! I lost my download with a few minutes left (after 2 hours of downloading it). Thanks guys, really, thanks, for not even warning me.

Second. Why do you force an install of Microsoft .net Framework 4? Doesn't Windows 7 include? I think most people, including myself, have it. That's a waste of time.

Third. So my computer restarts and I install the ACTUAL mod...get through the installation...and I see no new icons on my desktop or folders under all programs. In order to start the bloody thing I need to actually do a search for it on my hard drive to find out where it was installed to. Great. Another inconvenience. I still don't know if there was a new folder added to all programs or not.

So I boot up the game. Nice intro, but what's with that incredibly low resolution of the intro? That's SO 1990's! Then I get to the main menu. First thing I do as in any PC game is go to the options to change my settings. Well, the resolution is set to freaking 640 X 480, no WONDER the intro was low resolution! Change that. I also always enable subtitles in games. You never know when you'll have dogs barking or something that prevents you from hearing a conversation. Only...anything in the game menu such as enable directX 10, subtitles etc. that's a check box...doesn't work.

Another thing I do....I like to play my games with high mouse latency so I go to input...and don't see ANY options to increase/decrease mouse latencies. Really? This is feeling like some cheap console port or something.

So far, I haven't been able to play yet, but my experience has been negative. Very disappointed guys for the press this thing got. I expected more polish, more user-friendliness and the fact that I had such a poor experience from just installation and menus doesn't bode well. I seriously hope you guys patch these things.

Oh, AND THE AUTOMATIC RESTART HAS TO GO!!!!

Finally had some time to sit down and play some of the demo. I haven't gotten beyond the shoreline, but here are some early impressions - graphics are great. Game looks great.

In the first cut-scene, when everyone's opening fire on the shore, there's a moment when one of the hover boats passes in front of yours and your team keeps on firing, so as the hover boat passes the team fires at it. You need to correct it so when the hover boat passes in front of yours the team stops firing for a second otherwise its very immersion breaking.

As I was shooting at the nod infantry, I was firing at their hitboxes but no health was going down. It seems there might be some hitbox issues or something. That was a little annoying. Imagine my disappointment and sadness when I tried to enter the GDI humvees on the shore and couldn't. In old Renegade, you would've been able to do that. You could easily have soldiers in the humvees jump out and let you in (most other games with vehicles today do that).

Weapon and explosion sounds seem rather weak. They lack that "oomf" that a good FPS needs to really suck you in and make you feel like you're a part of the battlefield.

Missed being unable to increase mouse latency. I like a high mouse latency while I play. Missed in general not being able to go to options and change any settings during the game. Not good. Wish I could enable directx 10 but can't because I can't select it in the menu.

After the initial fight my health was low. Went looking for more but found none. Promptly died as I approached the turrets. Needs to be heatlh pickups or something after the battle to replenish health. Of course, if I could've entered one of those awesome Humvees I would've survived longer.

Reply Good karma Bad karma+3 votes
browncoat1984
browncoat1984

There was an enemy vehicle near the shoreline. I promptly destroyed it with....a few shots of my machine gun? That HARDLY feels realistic. What about adding in an objective or something to find a rocket launcher or something to blow it up with? Anyway, I went past the humvee and was going to explore a bit...only to hit a "leaving battlefield area" and promptly died before I could even turn around and go back. Gee, thanks. So within the first objective I died twice, and its not because of difficulty. Even battlefield 3 gives you some time to turn around and head back if you go to far. And I was disappointed too because the whole point of Renegade was to be able to explore large open areas.

I really want this to suceede but it feels like at best an early alpha. Like you guys just had to have a release so you rushed it through the door. Did anybody beyond the initial team beta test this to give you some impressions? I mean, it seems to be missing some features that almost anybody whose ever played an FPS would expect and FPS to have, - save/reload, changing mouse input latency, etc. And the installer has got to be one of the worst installers I've encountered in recent memories. Seriously. I just cannot get over automatic restarting. No installer has ever made my computer do that.

In my opinion, this if you're using this as a showcase for the game, then its a poor one at that. As someone whose been playing FPS games since the days of Doom, Duke Nukem 3D and Dark Forces, if I was to use this to judge whether or not I wanted to play the multiplayer game I would avoid it.

Okay, so I managed to get to the objective where you have to protect the MIRLS convoy. First, it randomly failed on me. I had no way to tell what the health was of the MIRLS convoy. Then, the next time I tried it, it randomly....completed on me? I had no idea what was going on but I just got annoyed and quit the game. I can see that there are a lot of great ideas here, but you should've waited a few months, had more people beta test it and polished it a LOT more before release because it feels very rough around the edges. If this thing is polished, the installer is fixed and the menu issues are fixed it could be a really fun game.

Totally amazing! all the work put in has definitely payed off. it's hard to believe that this mod/game/i don't even know anymore started 5 years ago!

Although i agree with a few of the complaints raised i don't feel it's really worth posting them as you guys really deserve nothing but praise for the amazing game you've made.

the one i would say is worth posting is what people are saying about the AI. even though i can appreciate how difficult it is to program good enemies, and the enemies are still an improvement over renegade's original enemies, the main problem i encountered with them is they always try and get too close. and unless they're planning to pull out their chainswords and unleash the fury of the emperor upon you. they could use a bit of distance in the way they fight. especially vehicles.

Reply Good karma Bad karma0 votes

What I posted isn't so much complaints as it is things that should be improved in future releases. I certainly hope that they aren't calling this a final release as there's a lot of stuff that could be polished for an even better experience, and the installer needs some serious improvements as well for a really professional feel.

I don't feel this has surpassed Renegade like you guys claimed was your goal, except in the graphics department.

-AI don't run and shoot.
-AI seem to run to static waypointed locations before deciding to select their next action(They actually stop moving before proceeding to their next task)
-Flamers have odd behaviors, facing the wrong way, torching invisible men.
-Mission 6.
--Sometimes the MLRS's take all the fire, but sometimes they don't. Nod doesn't seem to really have any priorities here just as long as they get to shoot at things.
--Soldiers also seem to run around aimlessly when they aren't standing to receive your all you can eat bullet buffet.
--It bothers me that I unloaded an entire gun emplacement... Clip? Into one of those Chinooks to no avail.
--Apaches seem to present very low survivability. Seriously, the emplacement just dies and then I do after only getting a single rocket off.
--Give players a mulligan, a one-time use repair? Maybe start with 4 or 5 MLRS'?
--The coloration is very bland, so make up for it by giving the player better visual queues on the well-being of the MLRS's. It wouldn't be hard to tack on a temporary HUD element.
--Why is Nod only attacking from that one direction?
---Wtf is up with those vehicles they send sporadically?
--The rocket soldiers, need threat markers or new skins to make them stand out better.
--Why isn't GDI using any spotlights?

I've been playing on Commando, and aside from the apache assaults, I haven't died once. Something's wrong here, if three flamers and two chaingun weilding officers aren't enough to take me down, why does this apache just tear me apart as soon as it looks at me? Where's my fighting chance?
