Trevor lived with his beloved wife Sarah and his daughter Hope, a happy family without worry or trouble.Trevor enjoyed taking walks with his daughter. She liked to play hide and seek, and had a collection of plush toys. Trevor worked as an archaeologist, and often went to and oversaw excavations. When he would return, he always had a new artifact to show Hope. She was always interested in her dad's new treasures.

Trevor's latest find was unusual. It was deemed unworthy of extra study by the few that saw it, and no museum or college took particular interest. It was a plain wooden figurine, humanoid in form. It had an odd twisting tail and a bizarre snout underneath sinister little eyes. Its face carried an expression of deviant and joyous anger. The creature was vile, bloodthirsty, ruthless--willing to do anything and everything that gave it pleasure. Trevor put the little statue in his office next to all the artifacts in his collection.

Later on, Trevor again was called back to the excavation site. He was there four months.

As the time passed, he began to notice that no one from home was calling him. No one sent letters like they had before. Beginning to become unsettled, Trevor left the area and tried to establish a connection, but no one was answering. Despite the financial losses and the protest from his colleagues, he quit the project and returned home as quickly as he could.

He opened his front door. It closed behind him.
