Whether you play as one of the elite marine Frontiersmen or the vicious alien Kharaa, you must use unique strategies and your abilities to win. Marines buy weaponry and form persistent squads to find and destroy alien hives. Aliens can choose a wall-running Skulk, pudgy Gorge, flying Lerk, murderous Fade or gigantic Onos that can devour enemies whole.

Real-time Strategy
New strategy gameplay allows players to Command from overhead. Build structures anywhere, collect resources and research upgrades. The marines can build phase gates, sentry turrets and siege cannons to assault the enemy. Aliens can build upgrade chambers, evolve special abilities, lay eggs and plant traps.

Dynamic Environments
Levels change as you play. Spreading alien infestation deforms hallways and causes space station power failure, halting all lifts. Destroying a catwalk's supports causes it to fall, revealing a new route. Use a flamethrower to clear infestation, spin webs to block a passage or weld a bulkhead shut for a last defense. Every game is different.

Unlimited Variations
Flexible game rules and scripting allow you to create your own unique scenarios like "Colonist Rescue", "Alien vs. Alien" or anything else you can dream up. Free automatic updates keep the game fresh by adding new levels and abilities.

Computer Core

Something must be in the air at Unknown Worlds. Not only are we announcing new games, we’ve also started hitting deadlines! We promised you Eclipse at the end of 2013, and with 11 days to spare we are proud to announce that is has been released!

Eleven years ago, Eclipse was one of the original Natural Selection battlefields. Tight corridors, multiple Hive spawns, iconic rooms, Eclipse was one of the greatest maps ever made for the original Half-Life mod.


Marine Start

Now, we can all return to Eclipse. Painstakingly recreated, the map is faithful to the original while allowing for the evolution of Natural Selection 2 gameplay. By taking advantage of Spark’s modern rendering techniques and UWE’s art resources, the mapping team has been able to remake every corner of Eclipse in exquisite detail.

Triad

The team that built Eclipse was led by Jake ‘Jonacrab’ Smith. Under the artistic direction of Cory, Jake drew together work from mappers Oliver ‘Dux’ Hobbs, Michael ‘Olmy’ Schouten, Andrew ‘Insane’ Jones, Marc ‘Sgt Barlow’ Newton, and art from Sergey, Dmitry, Yuri and others from Fox3D.


 Looking towards East Foyer

Eclipse is included as part of Build 262, which was just released on Steam. Build 262 is free for all existing players of Natural Selection 2, and includes a bunch of other improvements to the game. Here is the full change log: 

Fixes

  • Fixed players sometimes being stuck in command station at round start
  • Fixed Infestation blobs blocking commander view
  • Server Browser now highlights player count yellow if the server is semi-full due to reserved slots.
  • Removed texture streaming option from main menu since it wasn’t doing anything
  • Fixed all structures being outlined blue when on overhead mode as spectator
  • Fixed projectiles colliding with invisible movement collision group
  • Fixed ECHO_HARVESTER tooltip missing when echoing an Harvester
  • Fixed accidental use of voice order keys while ESC menu is open
  • Fixed bug where marine buy menu did not close when player was Stomped
  • Fixed Stab not having a custom icon
  • Fixed round start music not playing due to incorrect path
  • Fixed WhipBomb showing killed with BileBomb in console
  • Fixed loading screens using the wrong art sometimes
  • Fixed commander bindings reverting to default if a player joins a server before opening the options menu 

Features

  • Added new map: Eclipse
  • Added new main menu background
  • Added egg counter for Alien Commander in the top of the commander interface
  • Added Hive skill and level stats under name in main menu
  • Added support for new structures in ScenarioHandler. Added one other check path that works.
  • Added link to forums by clicking logo
  • Added remixed NS1/NS2 main menu theme

Balance

  • Ammo packs now refill all weapons instead of only the active one

Optimizations

  • Limit hit effect messages to 100 per second
  • Correctly limit max resources network field to 100 per player
  • Reduced network traffic generated by static structures
  • Implemented extra precaching to reduce incidence of hitching at the start of rounds
  • Optimized network traffic produced by Insight spectator system
  • Minor optimizations for skulk movement (optimized wall traces and removed predict wall walking)

Improvements

  • Insight spectator system now outlines players in overhead view by default
  • Replaced “request enzyme” with “request drifter” in the Alien ‘commo-rose’
  • Servers with cheats enabled no longer send data to the Hive stat tracking system 

SDK

  • Revert auto-generation of overviews by Builder due to Overview.exe crashes
  • Fixed crash in editor related to file type properties
  • Allow mappers to define custom round start music in ns2_gamerules entity
  • Added console command playmusic. Usage: sound/NS2.fev/pathtosound

Refinery (Thanks SamusDroid)

  • Fixed pathing in Lava Falls
  • Fixed some textures and gaps
  • Fixed some stuck spots
  • Adjusted some death trigger scales

I was going to pre-order this game,

but when I asked around on some fan forums about female models among other things, I encountered an extreme amount of sexism, and was even warned off by a friend who currently plays the beta, that the game is very 'female' unfriendly and extremely competitive.

Is this true? I may very well avoid this game if this is the case. I've rarely encountered a game with such a bad rep and absurd amount of trolling that's being suggested here..

Yeah, I'd recommend staying away. Female models don't make sense due to it being Marines is all. At least in the current U.S Army, female soldiers are never sent on combat missions, merely on defensive ones. That's just the way of the world current. I think a female marine model would look incredibly weird and out of place in Natural Selection.

I haven't seen anyone bashing females in the game, or on the forums...and if you haven't encounted a game with such bad rep and trolling, you must not play alot of games. This barely has any...compared to something like WoW, or Call of Duty, or Halo, ect, or heck, Counter-Strike. Those are far worse.

I'd say pre-order it if you want a fun game to play(but wait for a sale, or something, 35$ is far to much!), but don't expect there to ever be female models.

And all females in games will always get some flak from fellow players. Just how it goes.

I disagree that gamers are sexist, most people online will be as big an arsehole as possible reguardless of age, sex or race. No reason to single females out.

But my main disagreement is with the idea that a game doesn't have a female character it's sexist. The complaint wouldn't work if reversed. If I said "There are no playible guys in tomb raider. Therefore it's sexist against men." I'd rightly be laughed at for making such a rediculous argument.

No sale huh? Meh I give up. Maybe I'll take a look if it ever reaches a stable, features complete release state I'll buy it.. But Im not taking that much money for a beta that may never be.

That may never be? You can't be serious. Considering the amount of work they've already done and the fact it's perfectly playable (And the little fact of being completely independent; more or less funded by its buyers completely) they certainly deserve every penny. Good work Unknown Worlds.

It's up to each and every person to decide if it's worth every penny. It may be to you, but not to others.

I got it on sale for 17$ and felt happy with that price. I wouldn't have bought it @ 35$ though, not at all, not even at full release.
