Mycocosm represents the war that constantly rages beneath your feet - where resources are traded with unscrupulous dealers, alliances are forged and betrayed, and mighty empires start with a single individual; all within a few grams of soil.

As a plant, your objective is simple: survive and grow. To do so, you'll need access to phosphorous and nitrogen, two difficult to find yet vital elements. Fortunately, wandering fungus spores will trade you these resources in exchange for access to your carbon. Everything comes at a price, however, and these fungi will take what they can and exploit you where possible. Risky offers will begin to flood in, so quick reflexes and wary dealings will be your only chance against the trading onslaught.

Once you are well-established, it won't be long before enemies home in on your roots. Pathogenic bacteria will be drawn to your nutrients, and they'll gather in great numbers to extract what they can. Your only hope resides in the antibiotics released by fungal allies. As always, nothing is free in the soil. Build a strong root system to maximize your carbon supply, or build leaves to increase your carbon income. Whatever you do, don't wait. The microbial marketplace waits for no plant.

Mycocosm Battle

This is Mycocosm, an arcade-style plant manager. I designed it during the first year of my graduate studies, and it is based on the research done by the Kiers Lab.

Similar to my previous game, this one deals with microbes and the interactions between them. However, this time, you take control of a plant, and you must manage your resources via trades with wandering spores. Pathogens will attack your roots from time to time, and again, fungal spores will aid you for a cost.

Although it is much smaller in scale and size than my previous work, it was extremely fun to develop and work on. There are a few things still being worked on (such as sound and music), but the core of the game should be there. Some of the things to be included in the next (and final) update:

- Sound and music
- 2 additional defensive spore types
- 2 new pathogen enemies
- Achievements and scoreboard
- Educational factoids

Further down the line, I'll be bringing this game to other platforms such as Mac, and hopefully iPad and Android. I'm not sure how difficult this will be, but if it succeeds, I'll be porting my previous games to those platforms as well. Feel free to send me feedback on what you like or dislike!

Thanks, I wanted to try a style quite different than what I usually do, and it was fun to experiment! I still need to add some educational stuff to it, but I hope the game itself is enjoyable. I've just added a video (no sound) that shows how the game is played.
