An update on how we created and upgraded the foliage assets inside Mendel's Farm. We break down everything and show stages ranging from sketches to final results.

Hello everyone! We are back with another development update and we hope you have been enjoying the insights so far. As we have been updating all our old assets we find ourselves faced with the very old flowers and bushes in Mendel's Farm.

The flowered look pretty basic and are lacking any shading, and are in fact so bright in coloration that they glow! Knowing it was time for a change, both graphics artists, Brett and Owen took the opportunity to enjoy creating a variety of assets.

First up, Brett started with creating some images that can be used for the flowers and see what styles he could come up with.

After creating the textures Brett jumps into Blender and creates the mesh on which the textures will occupy. By separating the flower heads out on a texture we are able to map things out accurately and put the flowers together like LEGO inside our 3D editor of choice, Blender.

Once the base meshes have been made, we can un-hide our texture and see how things look.

The flower looked great, we were very happy with the result and Brett went on to create some more variations.

Now the flowers have been made we can place them into Unreal Development Kit and see how they look in Mendel's Farm.

The flowers Brett created look pretty good, and we are happy with the result, but we did mention Owen was also making some assets, so here is his breakdown and what he created.

He starts with some sketches, this allows him to think about what shapes and styles to use.

He then goes on to create a range of textures. Rather than fit all flowers on one file, he goes for the approach of having a texture for each flower, allowing for higher image quality at the cost of more processing power.

Once the images have been created he creates some meshes, and renders out some sample images to see how the meshes look.

The flowers look bright, beautiful and full of life!

It is now time to put everything together and combine all the previous results from the landscape, tree and rock formations with the new flowers and see how Mendel's Farm has changed.

We hope you have been enjoying these news posts! We will be moving onto the Fox and UFO very shortly! If you want to keep up to date, watch us here on IndieDB or follow us on Facebook or Twitter. Thank you again for reading and have a great day!
