i like games that go for the least amount of gui possible, but i would add waypoints, however subtle, you could even include an option to turn them off, but after years of playing mods the most frustrating thing can be when you don't know what to do next. and this seems like the type of game that needs it
We use more psychological tricks to guide the player. (Blinking) lights and movement does a lot.
im just saying that i would not know to go into that building, and then look through the file cabinet for batteries on a whim
