HIERARCHY is a game about survival in an unfamiliar environment. You start with nothing and must level up off the nearby mercenaries and creatures of the planet to build your strength. As you build strength you can access new areas. Exploration is rewarded with items and weapons, and as you level up you will unlock new powers and abilities... You are not alone-others, like you, were also put here. You must build yourself up to end your enemies before they find you. Work your way up the Hierarchy, and become the ultimate survivor, for once you are dead, you are lost forever.

Welcome

Hi and welcome to the first official update on IndieDb regarding Hierarchy the game! I usually try and get out another GameDev update video every 1-2 weeks, however depending on the workload sometimes the schedule doesn't really happen. That aside let's get talking about Hierarchy and what's new!

Items, Inventory and Teleportation Disc

I don't know whether you have checked out the previous videos however I implemented basic items and usage, that was literally limited to using an item. However I have worked on this system and have now implemented the ability to drop items, pick them up again, use them, hold stacks of items, and more. In addition I have upgraded one of the items I had in the game, and introduced another!

The existing item that was updated was the 'Detection Pole'. Even though I am at such an early stage in the games development I can envision the end result and I know what I am aiming towards. One of the features in the game, and a big feature at that will the detection of other players. I want a key mechanic to be the detection and hunting of other players. In addition the ability to know where other players are on the map via a variety of tracking requirements. One of these will be 'Detection poles'.

These will come in a number of tiers, the first tier being the most basic will be an alarm. Simply, if an enemy goes within its range it will set off a siren, which will continue unless destroyed, or until they leave the area. These are now fully ready to go! They are in the development video however you can't hear the alarm as I haven't setup the recording properly!

The new Item that I have added in is this latest build is the Teleport Disc! Sounds groovy right? Well it is! In addition to hunting players you are going to want to escape, or even get back to areas you visited before. One of the ways to do this is a teleport disc. It is a new type of item which requires 'Secondary Activation'. The way it works is that you can only carry one, but when you go to use it, instead of it removing from your inventory it activates it, and on pressing that button again it will use whatever functionality that has.

So for our teleport disc, this means dropping the disc at a location you choose and then when you need to, activating it again and teleporting back there. Simple yet elegant means of escape. This lays the ground for more items with secondary activations as well such as mines, traps or bombs! Be sure to check out the latest game dev video for a look at these!

AI Behaviours

In addition to some existing basic behaviour I had previously I have also started work on some new behaviours such as the Summoner, which summons allies if weak, and the aggressor, which gets a health boost and then an increase in attack speed, range and damage. In addition the various behaviours can work together to create an interesting mix of behaviours. I intend to add lots more as we go forward. Perhaps for different scenarios as well; it is quite a generic system so as I progress we can add in more and just bind them to the different events!

That's all for this update, be sure to check in again soon for updates, but don't forget to watch this project, check out the video and give feedback! Thanks!
