The year is 2600. The human empire expanded from the Earth for hundreds of years. Many of the colonies are defenseless, isolated by the void of space along a frontier around the Earth and its neighboring stars. You are the captain of the UFS Intrepid, UFSE's last hope for uniting this part of the galaxy.

No, but you can outfit your ship. You are assigned to a specialty ship. There are modding features, however, so you can create custom content. Sorry for the late reply! I honestly was not aware of this until now.
@ficholina actually, currently in rewrite, the 2016 versions of Fringes will allow this (eventually, we're in early access still)
