For One Night Only is a first person horror game where you play a child named Hannah. Hannah has been kidnapped by the Ringmaster of a circus called ‘Cirque de Douleur’. Free from your cage and late into the night, you must escape the circus grounds before the Ringmaster finds you and makes this your last visit to the circus.

For One Night Only was made by Polycounters, for an end of year college project. Juriën Meerlo, Rahim Traynor, Kieron Kelly, Mark Whitty, Mark Petson and Alan Flannery. The hope is that For One Night Only will continue production, adding further content while optimising and improving the content already included in the current build under Alan's new indie company Somnium Entertainment.

Back Under Development

News

We are very happy to announce that For One Night Only is back under development. We had originally planned to continue this project over a year ago but due to other projects and unforeseen circumstances we were not able to progress with this game. We are delighted to get back to work on this game title as we always loved the concept behind this project.

We were really excited and encouraged by all the positive feedback from the demo build of For One Night Only. Anyone who has played it has encouraged us and congratulated us on the specific areas that really appealed to them. Mechanics, theme and immersion are all really important to us. And from what we are seeing, these are the areas that are really hitting home for many of our players. We’ve had many YouTubers (strangers to us) find the game on indiedb, and record their experiences. Each of these has been invaluable.

With all this positive feedback, we are completely aware of the games rough edges. Most of the feedback while positive, has also exposed many of the bugs, sound volume issues, object scaling, texture issues and ai bugs. Most of these we were aware of before the build was released but we just wanted people to experience the game before continuing the project and fixing any issues or bugs.

For the moment, over the next month or so we are mainly focusing on improving the current build. Texture improvements such as remapping, adding specular maps and lightmapping. (Alan has already begun on the cabin, and it’s looking much better already and it will be getting a whole new look) AI issues with the birds in the forest have already been resolved.

We’re generally happy with the forest area, but we’ll be adding some nice new features and random events through the forest, as well as a good centralized feature for the forest for the player to explore or not explore at their peril.

Apart from texture fixes and some slight tweaks in how we guide the player from the locked door into the cage area, the cage area will be one of the few areas not to see huge changes. The plan is to take away the cards that disappear and replace them with objects that will go instead. Helping with the immersion and sense of Hannah’s mind playing tricks with you.

There will be be significant changes to the main circus area. Most notably we will be adding some light features and the Ferris wheel and carousel will be working by default. Hopefully adding some ambiance to the scene while still retaining and hopefully increasing the spooky and creepy nature of the zone.

There are many more features to be added to the current build, and what I’ve covered above is just the beginning of what we have planned.

Already we have the rough ideas of how the game will progress after the circus. We have decided with a Horror series style game with multiple levels all with separate mini stories. We want to give our players different horror experiences so by making it into a short story series we can achieve that. The circus experience is Episode 1 of the series.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has played the game and given us feedback. Please know that we are reading and listening to everything we get back. Community support and feedback is really important to us, and we value your reactions and experiences.

This game originally started as a college project and we now look to continue on with its development under the indie company Somnium Entertainment which is a small indie company set up by Alan. ( One of the college students who originally worked on the project)

So a poem turned up on my English homework with the same name as this game. It seems to reference the game as well. Is it from the game or is my English teacher just a fan?
The poem:

For One Night Only

The deadbeat circus
rolls up on the hard edge of town.

They're sledge- hammering stakes in, raising dust and thistledown.

Now they've run up the slack flounce of a tent.
A man barks at the moon.

They've nailed their colours on the sky
just as it darkens. Two bald clowns

come flatfoot, fly-postering everything
that can't get away. The show goes on

and on. Long past bedtime,
the stilt walker stalks through the street,

face level with your bedroom window.
In the morning, someone will be gone.
--

So, is it taken from the game, a strange coincidence or was my English teacher inspired by this?

I think that the game devolepers for this game should make it so that we have a choice if we want to let the candle go out after a while or not.

Enjoyed playing this, too bad I didn't actually know the candle goes out after a while... Guess it makes sense that way :D

I played the game a few times, only experienced a couple bugs but definitely love how it stresses you out. You never know where the clown guy will be and you can't use all of your candle OR have it off for too long. Definitely worth a try!
