A perfected F.P.S. I didn't know the first one could get better, and then you made this.

This is one of the more ambitious GM games I've played. It's long, complex, and visually stunning in places. It's also quite different from the first one. The biggest improvements were the increased variety and the lack of confusing mazes.

Once again I loved arena mode, though I do have a couple issues with it. The first game's arena mode had some flaws (most notably, the incredibly simplistic AI in King of the Hill and Sabotage modes), but it still had quite a bit of variety. FPS2 has better AI, but only one game mode, called Ascendency. This mode suits some play styles more than others. Many people would at least like the option of a regular deathmatch mode. FPS2 is also lacking in small maps (whereas the original had plenty). The wide open spaces with clear lines of sight make it easy for the AI to one-hit kill you with a sniper from across the map.

The game I thought of most while playing the campaign was Half-Life, for the extensive use of puzzles and the direct continuity between levels. The puzzles were interesting, but they broke up the gameplay a little too much (this was also a problem I had with the HL series). The shooter sequences were more fun and they seemed too rare compared to everything else. Also, the magnetizer (a vital part of the game that allows you to pick up objects) wasn't always responsive. Sometimes it would be a couple seconds before the game even showed the object you had picked up moving in front of you. Triggering in-game events could also be finicky. At the very start of the game, getting the meeting to even appear requires running around the base a bit. Overall I think the campaign needs more polish, though it's still pretty good as it is.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to completely finish the game yet because I'm stuck at one part about 2/3 of the way through. Still, I've had a good taste of the game's variety, and I have broadly positive feelings about the design, the gameplay, and the various improvements from FPS1. 8/10
