Being the standard side-arm for Commonwealth forces, the Enfield No.2 Mk I* variant was initially designed for the Royal Tank Corps. The spurless hammer design was intended to reduce the chance of the hammer getting caught on clothing or on the protruding surfaces within the close confines of the vehicle itself. Gradually, most No.2s where converted to this design during the war. Like all top-breaking revolvers used by the British forces, which would eject all casings upon opening, the Enfield No.2 was comparatively fast to reload.
