Excalibur breaks the mould of traditional space simulation games by putting the player firmly in the boots of an experienced Starfleet captain. From the outset you will be able to control your character and command your ship as if you were standing on the bridge yourself. From taking direct control of the helm, to transferring command of any ship in your task force, or even calling your senior staff to the briefing room to discuss mission tactics; Excalibur is the most immersive Star Trek experience ever. Set six months after the events in Star Trek: Nemesis, Excalibur's story mode deals with the turbulent political scene caused by a decade of war and turmoil. From the second Borg incursion in First Contact, to the fall of the Dominion and the collapse of the Romulan political system; these events resulted in huge loss of life and changed the Alpha Quadrant forever.

It was great to see the strong effort people have put into designing their textures. I think one thing Star Trek had over all the TV shows and films in the 60’s was the real rustic feeling to man exploring space. Many shows and films would often show a ship that had almost a Jules Verne bullet shape smooth textured feeling to it; Star Trek showed us a ship can be so much more than a steel tube.

The designs that came into us where all amazing and the ideas that have been put into them have been well thought out. From a “Goo” design that may be well suited to the fluidic space ships of Species 8472 all the way to the tiled surface of maybe an old beaten transport ship. The designs sent into us all had a unique style and it was wonderful to see such a range of talent.

Congratulations to our winner Joseph Egan and many thanks to all those who participated.

This design is a wonderful example of thinking outside the box. You can almost imagine the ship being built with this design with plates being placed together in an almost Tetris way. You can almost see imperfections in the ship’s hull where the panels have been beaten and slotted into position. I also like the way the designer has given different depth to each part of the design. You can see in one part that it could be a matter of millimetres for the panel to sit flush and on other parts centimetres which gives the design a wonderful rugged feeling to it.

As I said before this design was just wonderful and unique in its own right. The designer of this piece obviously took a step back and thought outside the box. The texture shows us a ship can be more than metal plates beaten into place but reminds us of the wonderful area of science fiction called Bioships. The design has a simplicity and yet elegance to it which I give the designer much respect for lateral thinking.

With this design it seems to show an almost patched surface to the ship it would be on. With the panels all being different sizes it almost feels as if the starship has been away for many years just like Voyager and had to patch itself after many great battles. A wonderful touch is the design of scratches on some of the tiles which just give it that extra rough texture which makes it feel it has done plenty of exploring.

The first one of these has nice depth textures that show the panels of the ship at different levels but yet fit together in a clean cut way. It has a wonderful uniform feeling to this texture but with still uniqueness with every tile being set at different heights. Someone can almost imagine taking a spacewalk to replace one of these tiles.
The second texture again for me feels very patchy, almost if you can imagine under each strip of tile having the different systems imbedded into the ship. It gives the ship a real man made feeling that every panel has been carefully slotted on and you get a feeling of the complexity of the ship. Fantastic textures yet again with much thought being put into the work.

I would like to say a big thank you for all those who have submitted to us and the quality of the work has been to a very high standard. The designs have been well thought out and have gone all over the scale of the Star Trek universe. It is wonderful to see people thinking not about a pattern but a design that can truly bring the Star Trek Excalibur experience to life. These textures will breathe life into the ships of the game which is going to bring the experience to a whole new level.
