This is a remake of the Atari 2600 version and largely plays just like the original, with some differences. Mainly, the holes do not appear as you have to find them. Once you do, a you can press a key to drop down into them.
The objective is to find the 3 pieces of ET's phone so that he can go home but they are in holes scattered around the 4 areas. Hindering you in this progress is the FBI and the Scientist. The FBI will either steal all your Reese's pieces (which help to replenish your energy) or will steal a phone piece from you and hide it. The Scientist will just take you to the Government building.
