Empires is a turn-based strategy game in which a player's task is to face the greatest rulers of even two hundred historical empires. You can create your country on a giant, three-dimensional map, which exploration and conquest is a huge challenge for even the most experienced players.

The main tools of conquest are powerful, multi-districts cities and an army of units having actual numbers of soldiers. Thanks to a thriving economy based on economic zones producing raw materials, presented in real quantities and units, the player can sustain the development of their cities and have, based on the huge and realistic system, trade with other empires.

However, for players who love the peaceful conquest of the world Empires offers extensive diplomatic options. Create alliances between countries or associate them in a huge international organizations like NATO. Fight for the leadership of the advice of his alliance, and encroaching on the fate of the world and foreign wars, thanks to their votes on the board of the United Nations. Fight with other countries without official notice the war and remember that “history is written by the victors”.

Empires

Visualization update

In the last post we talked about the changes made during the last visualization system update in Empires. Now we expand this information and give you some new information with screenshots. If you have not seen last post, you'll find it here: DevLog #3.

Forests and how they lost "hexagonality"

Forests in Empires have always been like forests in Civilization. Simply we stored information, about whether there are, or not. However currently we store information not only about where the forests are, we also store data about their current density, what is the total change in comparison to the system in Civilization. In consequence forests in Empires are no longer in hexagone shape. Below are two screenshots, with old forests (first one) and new one, less "hexagonal" (second):

Apart from prettier visualization, change of method of storing information about forests enables us to introduction more realistic behavior of them. Among other things, when we have a sawmill, which doesn't plant new trees and only cut them out (which will increase the amount of wood produced per turn) we find out that count of trees will decrease. This will lead to make a situation in which after a few turns field on which the sawmill is, runs out of trees, and we will be forced to turn trees planting by the sawmill workers on, or demolish the sawmill.

But you do not have to worry, though sawmills management is carried out by the economic zones and enabling/disabling automatic planting of trees for all of sawmills located in the zone of influence of the city is reduced to a single click. More about the economic zones in Empires will be announced in the near future.

How huge current visualization area is?

Currently, the maximum standard visualization area in Empires is 210x160 hexes - it is much more than the largest map in Civilization - 128x80 fields. At this point you may be thinking: "But how? Displaying such an area will require a high-end computer!". The visualization in Empires is optimized and built to show as biggest area with the least amount of computing power right from the beggining of the work on Empires.

We can do this thanks to, among other things, a good and optimized rendering system in Unity engine, but also our own algorithms, which use completely different ways to create and manage the map visualization area than those from Civilization.

Below you will find some pictures of the prototype world map in Empires. Pay attention to the size of the visualization area and in the comments try to guess the names of the world areas shown on screenshots:

While commenting these screenshots remember that this is only the prototype map, and on the most of area still are not set things like forests, biomes, mountains and other terrain types. All of this will come in near future and we will of course show you them on new screenshots ;)
