You really nail the light in your landscapes. You are a very talented artist, I'd follow this game for the concept art alone.

It's hand-painted in Photoshop. There I do of course use things like layers, transparency etc.

ah I see, because I heard that you can adjust the color balance and so on via engine

There are ways to color sprites on the runtime, yes. There are even tools like SpriteLamp for dynamic lighting the sprite from different sides. ... One simple shader that's in the game is one for changing hair and skin colors, so internally every humanoid is now pixeled with white skin / blue hair and the engine makes darker and alien skin colors from it.
