“A deserted island…a lost man…memories of a fatal crash…a book written by a dying explorer.” Two years in the making, the highly anticipated Indie remake of the cult mod Dear Esther arrives on PC. Dear Esther immerses you in a stunningly realised world, a remote and desolate island somewhere in the outer Hebrides. As you step forwards, a voice begins to read fragments of a letter: "Dear Esther..." - and so begins a journey through one of the most original first-person games of recent years. Abandoning traditional gameplay for a pure story-driven experience, Dear Esther fuses it’s beautiful environments with a breathtaking soundtrack to tell a powerful story of love, loss, guilt and redemption. Winner of 2012 IGF Excellence in Visual Art. Supported by Indie Fund.

Quick question, this is supposedly a "ghost story". Does that mean I'm gonna crap my pants at some point? I like how the game focuses on story and visuals, but I absolutely hate horror games like Amnesia or Penumbra. It's ok if it's really creepy, but running from ghosts and monsters isn't my cup of tea.

If thats your interpretation of Amnesia and Penumbra then you haven't played the games properly the storyline is the main part of those games the monsters are just part of the story, a horror game like that puts you into a position where you are helpless and vulnerable, that is what makes the game damn scary and really good, the point to Amnesia and Penumbra is not running from monsters, infact Penumbra Requiem has no monsters in it.

He didn't say it was "the point", he said doing it isn't his cup of tea. That's not a misinterpretation of anything.

Anyway Duke, I feel like explicitly saying what is or isn't included somewhat spoils things, but you'll be fine in Esther.

From the trailer video the graphics look absolutely stunning. I played the original mod and I thought that the atmosphere and story were by far the most beautiful yet disturbing I have ever witnessed in a video game.

Also, am I the only one who thought Dear Ester 2009 had better atmosphere?

Sure this is a thousand times prettier, but some of that limbo creepiness is gone.

Night-time maps don't suit the story, I think.

The last map in the mod was at night. Though I like both, the level design is fits the music and voice over far batter in this.

That was amazing, yet i still don't understand exactly what happened in the ending. Or the storyline itself... well time to piece everything together for the heck of it!

A word of warning, this is definitely not for everyone, I can imagine someone downloading it thinking there would be a lot of action, but there is not. The game contains breathtaking vistas and other sights, the visuals is absolutely astonishing. I first thought that this game would only run with 30 fps on my computer, but the game ran surprisingly well, I don't think I had a single (visible) framedrop. If I had to give some criticism to the game, it would be the story and the way it is presented…

This game is not a game and the game length is almost as long as a movie. It's not worth the price tag for such a remake like this and should have deserved watching this through YouTube without the need to walk and play through a boring tale without the usual purpose of gameplay.
