Darkout has been in development since July 2011 by a small group of people from very different countries (UK, Southafrica, France, The Nederlands...) behind the game there is Adrian Banninga, an industry veteran who has been working in the CG field since 2000.

The main features of the game are:

  • Sci-fi theme with elaborated graphics. The game atmosphere is clearly inspired in movies like Aliens, I am Legend or Pitch Black. Also the game aims to capture the beautiful landscapes seen in recent films like Avatar.
  • Great survival component. Your character will be constantly harassed by enemies coming from the darkness and will have no other choice than fighting for his life with the weapons he will find, everything to gain access to precious resources he can craft/loot/harvest.
  • Light vs. Dark combat system. You are the only survivor in a world ruled by darkness where light will be your best ally to make your road through hordes of hostile creatures. At the same time, the light will be the biggest attractor for the enemies who want to destroy you and convert your soul todark matter by all means. Other nice point to mention is that the player will encounter some awesome and fierce bosses waiting for him at different points of the game.
  • Exploration and strategic component. The game design is shaped in a way that the player will have to think twice about where to set his base, how to manage resources he find and and research the materials from his environment in order to upgrade his equipment. In this way you will evolve your character along the game acquiring unique habilities and features for your tracksuit and weapons.
  • The game will be released in Q3 2012, on next months we have planned to release a beta version and also to submit to Steam. Versions for iPad and XBLA are also on our schedule. The game updates will be free and inclusive for the initial game price, also the price of the game will be very competitive with Terraria and Minecraft.

So is there not any sort of demo or anything? I'd love to try this game out, but $15 is a bit steep for a game that I know so little about with others like it (such as Starbound) already more well known. None of my usual sources have even heard of it and I just stumbled on it by accident really. I've seen in the forums discussions of people who can't even run the game with all sorts of strange things being required (latest video drivers, disabling DPI scaling -- I've NEVER heard of anything ever actually requiring this compatibility setting before -- and third party applications) and several saying that even after all that the game won't run. I'm definitely not spending $15 on this without knowing whether or not it will even run on my computer...

You should watch some of the videos available about the game like say the Dad's Gaming Addiction one: Youtube.com. Just try to find relatively new ones as last to versions overhauled large parts of the game. While I only played the beta the my impressions about the game still seem valid looking at above video: The game is graphically superior to terraria but this has the disadvantage of making it harder to make out the blocks game world is made out of that has consequence of making it harder to target and place stuff. The game starts ridiculously hard and expect to die constaly, especially at night/darkness, until you manage to set up your first shelter and even then you continue to die constantly when outside gathering resources. Both the interface and controls are a bit clunky. As for difficulties running it, I had none and my computer is 5 year old WinXP machine with only modern part being the year and half old Radeon 7700 series card. My drivers arent the latest either.

The constant dying was the reason I stopped playng eventually as it was no fun (I died at least 20-30 times before I managed to set up shelter and further 100 times over week or so I played). If the that and clunky interface aren't your thing, I suggest you either wait few more versions or look for alternatives.

So, Darkout was on sale at IndieGala today for $2.99. However, it was back at regular price not 4 hours later, even though the GalaRep posted that it was a week long deal on Reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/GameDeals/comments/1usr0f/galastore_indie_games_week_darkout299_afterfall/).
A lot of people are, of course, very unhappy about this.

Anyone know how I can get ahold of this deal or why it was pulled from the Gala store?

make sure you are logged into desura website. Then go to www.desura.com/collection and it should show your games on a list. Im not sure how to get to that page from the site though. Click on keys by the game and generate a steam key.

My Matter is simple: Still no Steam Key received.
