HL2 Mods won't run. Thread

I have over the years played literally hundreds of HL and HL2 mods, so I know that some of them can present challenges to successfully install. I just lately got back into seeing what new mods have come out since I last looked.

Some HL2 mods I download and extract to my Steam/steamapps/sourcemods folder will not run; I get the Valve splash screen, then the game crashes as soon as the game launch window opens. Specifically at the moment I would like to play the Killzone Source mod, but can't get past this issue. If anyone has any suggestions on how to go about troubleshooting this, I would appreciate it. I'm sure there may be troubleshooting guides around; maybe just point me to that.
