GDH Stockholm is a concept me and my buddy have been talking about lately. We are both hobby game devs and both have we been on the lookout for some place we could meet like-minded people, to no success. Hence GDH Stockholm. A non-profit organisation located in Stockholm with the single goal of providing youth game devs with a place and time they can gather and talk to others like them.

Our biggest affiliate would be Sverok, providing mainly financial support, with which we plan to rent a house, this house would be used for monthly meetups, at which there could be cool guest speakers, events, competitions or just plain mingle. We also plan on asking the universities and studios involved in game dev for sponsorships, and if all goes well it is well within reason to be able to have a weekly meetup instead.

We believe this idea will be successful because there is nothing of the like here in Stockholm, and with a booming game industry still on the rise the demand is most definetily bigger than the supply.

Im interested in hearing you guys thoughts on this, what you think will be troublesome, and if you have any tips to kickstart the whole thing i'd gladly hear you out.

Last but not least i'd like to throw in a shameless plug and say that we are looking for one last member to fill the interim founding board, we are looking for a secretary, and this secretary could be located anywhere in the world, since it'd be founded online, but of course it would be so much better if he/she actually sit in Stockholm.

Thanks for taking your time to read all this, looking forward to hear your thoughts!

It is a cool idea. Given that there are writer's workshops and other forms of workshops out there meant to act as a hub base for people of like minds, I'm surprised there isn't a big community hub out there yet dedicated solely to Game Design.

Good luck with your efforts!

Update: We have gone through with the idea and now have office in Kungsholmen, Stockholm. We went with Sesus instead of Sverok. Our website is www.sgdh.org which stands for Stockholm Game Development Hub. There's been a lot of enthusiasm around the idea and we just had our first meetup. The idea is still pretty much the same, albeit a little more casual perhaps. It's basically an office anyone can go to to work and hang out with likeminded people.

If anyone else is interested in starting something similar in their hometown i would love to hear about it and perhaps offer to help or join forces :)

Hi! As a point of interest: the city of Brighton, on the south coast of England, has a similar venture called the Brighton Game Collective. They're also a non-profit, with a focus on renting office space, but also getting involved in organising local social events.

Feels like it would be remiss of me not to mention it here :)
