Most likely because you are a newly registered member of the community. Quite many people abuse the karma system and use it for karma wars and karma spam, so it must have been overhauled somewhere along the way. |

Originally it was designed so to enable the community (and mod developers) to moderate comments sections by themselves without admins' help, and bury bad, spammy, unconstructive or ad-hurling comments. Well, it seems that its original purpose was more and more perverted with time and the system may no longer be necessary (instead, some more anti-spam measures and tighter moderation by admins seem to be more needed lately). |

It should have been a given that it would be perverted with time, considering it's a trust-based system in this day and age. |
