To my knowledge we have received no takedown request from Activision. Activision recently released modding tools: Indiedb.com so it is possible that someone in their legal team wasn't informed. If we receive anything further we shall discuss it with Activision. I'm confident they are not trying to kill mods or anything like that, probably the opposite as it is great to seeing them encouraging the mod community once more.

Hello,

I got last week by surprise an email from Detect Monitoring Service | Easy Solutions (dms@easysol.net / soc_row@easysol.net) in the name of Blizzard / Activision requesting that my Call of Duty MOD site be shutdown because copyright infringements when really there's NOTHING ilegal there, just my Call of Duty MODs like Frontlines FOREVER, W@W Frontlines & Black Frontlines, he said I can use the "Call of Duty" name... so how can I show my mods to a game which I can't even use the name to let people know the game to buy to play them?? Really???

"he said I can use the name"

Didn't you mean to write that you can't use the name? Is that a typo from you?

Sounds like you made a webpage called Call of Duty and that is how you infringe the copyright.

I'm guessing they want the modding community to focus on their latest titles instead of older ones.

I can understand that.

So with that in mind; are you planning on making any mods for the new COD, Hajas?

Oct 24 2016 Anchor

It would probably be best to show the whole letter from Easy Solutions.

He's got so many difficulties with the english language...

Does the mail concern the pages on moddb or on your website? Mods.hajas.org

For real?

Oct 26 2016 Anchor

Oh... No.. If this will be gone i'll be gone. Everyone will be gone! :c

Sounds like someone who is either really uninformed about what is going on in the modding scene and with his company's terms of use guidelines, or someone who just doesn't like your work and trolls you. I can't really take seriously some who sent pictures to justify himself and believes that "MOD tools are used for BETA testing for new official Call of Duty games" and not tools, for, ehm, making MODS. If this was a legal infringement on your part, you would be talking with their legal department and believe me, they would only sent ONE strict e-mail/letter with a take-down demand.

EDIT

Now that I re-read the letter they sent you, they may actually be an authorized by Blizzard/Activision company. But that doesn't mean you should take their word and close everything down. If you are in doubt, contact Blizzard/Activision themselves and tell them what happened. I am sure they'll be of help, since mods are 100% legal.

I'd be most interested into a screenshot of the email that he got from easy solutions. If it really is just a troll he might have found this Blizzard Authorization.pdf somewhere maybe on reddit or who knows. But if that person really is who he claims to be it would be interesting to hear his exact writing not just the telling from Hajas.

I mean it would take me about a half hour to make an email where I claim to be the president and demand that you have to send me your wife and daughters for immediate intercourse.

Prima Nocte!

Buuuuut Hajas has gone silent soooooo........

Oct 27 2016 Anchor

Well, looking at how some of the mods were gone overnight (Escapistmagazine.com), this better be a joke than a serious issue, but if there is a chance this is serious, why would you drag the original poster and modder through the mud instead of waiting for his explanation and follow-up? Grammar Nazi much?

That does not mean it is okay to just ruin and eradicate mods for old games. Modders including the OP would be most discouraged this way, why would he make another mod for a newer game?

Hahaha, true! :D .

But yeah, the original e-mail would help clear things up. Just read the Escapistmagazine.com article, did not know this thing happened. Why do companies release modding tools, if they don't allow mods in the first place? How does a mod ruin an AAA title, since the are non-profitable? And as feillyne said, why would modders make mods for games then if their are not even sure if their work will not be deleted by force at some point.

Me drag him through the mud due to grammar? Look my mother speaks italian she translates stuff for italian people to german because they can't read the letters they get from the state. It goes always like this:

omg what did the state send me again, they want more money from me or what? Then she translates the thing and it turns out to be nothing negative but an entire evening was spent dragging the state through the mud.

You may not like me anymore feilyne but stay fair. I did not drag him through the mud neither did I insult him. His english is bad, saying its bad isn't an insult.

I am still waiting for a screenshot of the original email. As long as he doesn't provide that, he is just some dude on the internet claiming something. There is always a "chance" but I do not jump to conclusion out of pure chance. I want to know first what we're dealing with.

My grammar is bad too and I admit I totally forgot where one puts an , in the english language. Happens mostly because I am a swiss who has to know 5 bloody languages. Now if Hajas would finally show up again we could go back to the topic.

Oct 27 2016 Anchor

That was you as in yous not you. What was really meant, it is too soon for you to disregard this issue, but we would have to need some follow-up from Hajas.

Well, there is a simple reason for that. Potential customers may choose to save their money and play the mods instead (i.e. spend the bucks on something else entirely).

Oct 27 2016 Anchor

Well, don't you need to have bought the actual AAA title in the first place, in order to play a mod ? Are these new modding tools standalone?

Oct 27 2016 Anchor

No, you can just

  1. play mods of older games (you already own)
  2. play game-themed mods for someone else's products

instead of buying that new AAA title in question. Being standalone is a different issue. So this can be harmful for their business, but in most cases mods have a beneficial effect on the community and hook fans on the franchise even more, creating and maintaining a loyal core fanbase.

That's my belief too. I am a GoldSRC mod developer and here I am, making a mod and being part of another team which also makes one, for a game that is already 18 years' old. And the company that made the original title still makes money out of it, after all these years. I just can't see why companies prefer to ignore this and do not try to encourage potential mod developers even more, but instead take actions like the one we are talking about in this thread. But, I see your point: people still play Half-Life mods and don't buy Half-Life 2, for example. If companies believe the last is the norm, then what else can I say besides the modding scene is doomed.

This is very stupid, there's really no reason to shutdown my site.

I really regret now for made Frontlines to Call of Duty, they simply stole my work over and over title after title and now this, maybe if I did to source/valve Frontlines could be a standalone game like Insurgency for exemple.

Any help is appreciated. cheers

They stealing from you? More like you stealing from them.

Yeah sure now you ain't got internet for a week but you're making MP mods.

Provide the email you got.

Since you no longer mention them wanting to shut down moddb can we guess now that it was just you panicking?

Very bad things? Your english sucks and you still FAIL to provide a screenshot of the email. Oh sure loving wife and family prevent you from spending 2 minutes here in the last 10 days. People don't go full panick mode and then instantly turn silent.

I deleted my post since it was long and borderline offtopic since it concerned moddign in general. It had little to nothing to do with you.

You came here to warn? You came here to spew lies and slander. I understand your poor english fine I wonder if that person from easy solution (if he even exists) does.

You wont get any sympathy from me Mr. www.CallofDutyHajas.se

Some dude claiming something on the internet.

Dude, you don't do mods, make your profile private and is hidden behind a nickname, and even didn't waste 2 seconds to click on the link to realize that I'm a modder for around 30 years even before the first modtools were released or even the term "mod" exist, then I Will really lose my time photoshoped all this only to get attention, and now I'm very happy that I found u with all that wisdom in the replies, which doesn't bring any solution, but only focus in my english and not the topic.

I gave you the logo in my reply, which is 90% of the screenshot, the rest is a menu with a pic of the city, but u didn't found because my english is bad and you didn't understood, so please step aside and let the modders talk.

Cheers

You don't know me but oh look suddenly you are mister knows it all. Are you trying to intimidate me? What kind of joke are you for a 30+ year old. Another clear sign of stupidity.

So far I have been saying the wisest thing here by asking for the original email that you got. No one wants to read your shitty understanding of what you think he wrote. It also doesn't take a genius to understand that 12 year olds these days are so capable they even hack the FBI how much of a genius does it take to alter an email and then show it here?

For an oldtimer like you surely its easy to pick such a picture up somewhere. Does it prove anything of your story? NOPE. Oh sure I will step aside and let the serious idiots talk since I am done with you. Even if you went through the trouble of showing the email it wouldn't mean shit. The best thing is that you have 0 understanding of what is "right". Legally they probably have every right in the world to shut your websites down.

Yeah sure Cheers. Is it coincidence that you pop up the day IW and MWR release? Or is it the perfect timing for a troublemaker? Your website is still up. Ignore any mail you get and if you think you're right then sue them. Take care of your family.

Sorry that your plan to piss on call of duty to get sympathy for your indie game backfired.

It seems it is only the website Callofdutyrio.com.br that caused Easy Solutions to send you an email. Maybe they thought it looked too 'official'. I don't think Activision (itself) wants to shutdown any mods [I sure hope they don't].

As for BO3, I still haven't finished the main story, I've just been too busy this year, though I like it a little more than 'Advanced Warfare'. The mod tools for it are open-beta now, I hear.
