In my opinion, every developer that takes extra time and effort to make a custom engine deserves a tap on the shoulder. And if it works on other platforms like Linux and Mac too, then he deserves some extra cash as well.

Custom Build is the future honestly. There's nothing bad with it except things that can be polished on.

these tend to be great engines, you gotta love a studio willing to put forth the efort to make its own way and not use anothers hard work.

Even the best and most popular game engine were once custom built. So the best engines of the future will first appear in this category. :-)
